From Soccer Fan to Sports Journalist: How Curious Cardinals Ignited an Eighth Grader's Passion
This year, a budding sports journalist in LA found his path with Curious Cardinals.
That was where Curious Cardinals mentor Linus came in. A rising sophomore at Northwestern and a British-born soccer nut himself, Linus says that when he was Caetano’s age, he was “pretty much the same person.” Linus didn’t come into their relationship with a pre-standardized curriculum. Instead, he asked his new mentee: “Caetano, what do you want to do?” They decided upon a challenge for Caetano: placing himself in the mindset of the general manager of his favorite club, Real Madrid. Which players were performing best? Which stars from other clubs might be worth acquiring? How to react to the evolution of the sport?
With Linus’s help, Caetano developed and strengthened his voice as a sports journalist and built a website to house his game reports and thoughts on the sport. Linus helped him to develop skills like coding and to apply his knowledge of analytics to creative problem-solving. Caetano reports that he is now looking to start a sports podcast in the fall. When the education system fails to meet their pupils where they are, as Linus met Caetano, it wastes the potential of distinctive students just waiting to be inspired. Curious Cardinals’ unique student-to-mentor matching system can custom-select an equally unique mentor to help fire that inspiration.
